Portamento vs Legato: Different Types of Smoothness
Portamento is often confused with legato, but they are distinct techniques. Legato refers to playing or singing notes in a connected, smooth manner with no silence between them. Portamento goes further: it audibly slides through the intermediate pitches between the starting and ending note. Think of a trombone sliding between two notes versus a violin playing them connected but distinct. In vocal music, portamento is a deliberate expressive choice — a quick slide can add emotional urgency, while a slow, wide portamento creates a dramatic, almost cinematic effect.
The Physics of a Pitch Glide
During portamento, a singer maintains sound while pitch travels between notes. The rate and shape of that movement affect how the gesture is perceived. Blob Opera lets a player move continuously through pitch, but Google's public materials do not isolate portamento as a separately measured training target.
